PUNE: Pune City Police have registered 25 FIRs against illegal money lenders and arrested 35 people, including a police officer, for their involvement in the illegal money lending business.

Some of the money lenders charged interest rates of up to 60% on the money loaned.
On Friday, criminal branch officials arrested an illegal money lender from Yevalewadi for threatening a businessman (32) from Kondhwa. The businessman had taken out a loan of Rs8lakh from the loan shark about a year ago. The pawnshop demanded Rs22lakh including interest and principal from him. When the businessman expressed his inability to pay the huge sum, the loan shark began to threaten him.
Likewise, in a joint operation by the Pune City Criminal Branch and Shirur Police on December 19, six men, including a police officer and a money lender, were arrested for kidnapping a businessman (33) from Shirur and detained him in a slum. linen room in Dhankawadi. Police teams raided the scene and rescued the businessman and then arrested the six men. The suspects had made threats against the businessman, demanding 60% interest on the amount loaned.
Pune Police Commissioner Amitabh Gupta said: “We have now focused our attention on the illegal money lenders operating in the city. They not only harass the victims, but also get involved in incidents of kidnapping, assault, housebreaking and others.
Police have issued a dedicated phone number 9145003100 for people to complain about harassment by pawn shops.
“The number of lawsuits against pawn shops has increased over the past two weeks after we launched special campaigns. We have registered 25 cases in the past two weeks. Our action will continue, ”said Gupta.
